Safari Holiday Packages 2027: Why the Best Camps Sell Out 12 Months Ahead

Golden-hour savannah scene for safari holiday packages across Tanzania

Everyone assumes they can book a safari next spring for next summer. They can’t, not if they want the small, beautifully placed camps that make a safari feel truly special.

For peak Great Migration travel between July and October, the honest booking window is usually 12 to 18 months ahead. With July 2027 now less than a year away, this is the sweet spot for securing first-choice camps, preferred rooms and well-planned routes before annual increases are applied.

Why the best safari camps disappear first

The most sought-after camps may have fewer than eight tents. Add limited flights, family suites, private vehicles and riverfront locations, and availability can vanish quickly.

Booking now gives you the best chance of choosing:

  • The dates that suit you
  • A camp near the Mara River in Kogatende, Lamai or the Maasai Mara
  • Two or three full nights in each key area
  • Family rooms, private vehicles or specialist guides
  • Competitive rates before the next annual pricing cycle

Late bookers aren’t locked out. Flexibility over the order of camps, travelling in June or November, or choosing lesser-known reserves can still deliver an extraordinary safari.

Your 2027 migration calendar

The Great Migration follows rainfall, so dates are approximate rather than guaranteed. That uncertainty is exactly why an experienced guide and enough time matter.

  • January–March Calving on the southern Serengeti plains around Ndutu. Around half a million births create thinner crowds and remarkable predator action.
  • April–May Long rains, lush scenery and herds moving north-west. Quieter, green and wonderfully atmospheric.
  • June Grumeti River drama, with fewer vehicles than the busiest Mara season.
  • July–August The main event: Mara River crossings around Kogatende, Lamai and Kenya’s Maasai Mara.
  • September–October Herds criss-cross the Mara River, while vehicle numbers often thin after August.
  • November–December Short rains bring fresh grazing and the herds begin returning south.

River crossings can’t be scheduled like a show. Staying north for at least two or three full nights is the realistic minimum, and a spotter network working with experienced guides can make a meaningful difference.

Don’t overlook the Green Season

November to March can be magical. Expect vivid landscapes, migrant birds, newborn animals and lower rates in many areas. There’s also the rare luxury of having a sighting almost to yourself.

Match your timing to the experience

The right month depends on more than the migration:

  • Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda: June to September or December to February. Permits are limited to around eight people per gorilla group per day, so book months ahead. See Visit Rwanda’s official gorilla tracking guidance.
  • Walking safaris: South Luangwa and Mana Pools are strongest from June to October; many bush camps close during the rains.
  • Okavango mokoro safaris: May to August, when seasonal floodwaters create high-water channels. The Okavango flood cycle explains why the Delta floods during the dry season.
  • Star beds and sleep-outs: Generally best in the dry season, from May to September.
  • Hot-air balloons: Available over the Serengeti and Namib dunes, usually arranged early.
  • Cape Town and the Winelands: November to March offers warm, rewarding conditions.

New camps and lodges are also opening in the northern Serengeti for the 2027 season. That creates fresh choice, and fresh demand.

For families, school holidays make early planning even more important. We can suggest child-friendly camps, sensible driving times and routes that work around fixed July and August dates. Pairing the migration with Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire also means a missed crossing never makes the whole trip feel wasted.
